In-game ad house Double Fusion has brought dynamic, in-game video advertising to the PlayStation 3 game Wipeout HD across North America and Europe, the company said Monday.
Double Fusion said it will inject advertising that will complement the hover-racer’s futuristic presentation.

Here is Video of the Before and After AD-dition of advertisment to Wipeout HD. (Embedding was Disabled)

The ad added 10seconds more to the loading time of the game. This particular ad has been pulled since then but the fact that advertising can be added to a game AFTER PURCHASE is just fucking wrong. And they plan on doing this to other PS3 titles.

IT is my opinion that if I have to watch ads I should not have to PAY TO PLAY THE GAME. End of story. And everyone who has bought Wipeout HD should get a refund.

The really bad part of this is the addition of the ads was not part of an update. When you start the game online and you get a message saying “an update is available do you want it?” and then you agree or disagree to the update. This is not part of that. It downloads in secret when you go online and installs without asking permission. Then the ads show up even when playing OFFLINE. Your fucking harddrive space is being taken up by their advertising. FU Sony. Stop acting like Microsoft.

no bullshit Yet Another Reason Not buy a PS3....Ads being retroactively added to your games.

We are tired of your Bullshit Sony!!!

I will never buy a PS3, hell I will not buy a PS4 as I know you’re just going to continue pushing the boundaries of screwing over your customers. I think this Comment from Slashdot has nailed the issue perfectly.

“So, what’s next? Can we look forward to fighting the Kool-Aid Man and zombified Mars bars in Uncharted, or is there anything that can be done to hinder companies from adding advertisements retroactively, without the customer’s prior knowledge?”

I would like to fight the Kool-Aid Man. Other than that, it’s pretty big bullshit. Either let us choose to disable the ads since we’re paying full price for these games, drop the price of the games, or give us an option: “Will you let us run ads? If so, we will add $X to your PSN account wallet.” We deserve some sort of reimbursement for that.

Lucky for me, it’s pretty tough to stuff in-game advertising in fantasy RPGs. What are they gonna do, throw a “For a real life copy of this sword, go to ReplicaDungeon,” during a loading screen?

Well if they do allow ads in RPG’s then yes replica Dungeon will start trying to get you to buy Sephiroth’s Sword. But then they would also sell you insurance, Boy Band Albums, and all sorts of other things that will completely break the immersion of the game. “Did you just leak on your couch? Try Warcraft Brand Tampons. Their Purple just Like You Night Elf Princess! Fight the HORDE!”

Yes, but games like Madden, Gran Turismo or WipeoutHD have placards and billboards that have places where ads can go. I just don’t see a place where you can implement them in an RPG without the setting of the game getting ruined.
