Xbox TV 300x213 Would you watch Xbox TV?We already have G4 and Spike TV and they have run out of interesting shows to play. Spike at least is for males in general and so can have a slightly larger pool of programing to pull from. G4 is just a shill for Gamestop to push whatever game is big this week. Do we really need another gaming channel? G4 may pull from all systems but they have hit the same wall that the 24-7 news stations hit long ago. There just isn’t enough going on to fill that much programing time. This leads you to talking up things that aren’t news just to fill the voids. Can a station dedicated only to Xbox games and hardware find that much to say each day?

Microsoft thinks so. Microsoft is in talks with former News Corp. President Peter Chernin to create an Xbox TV station dedicated to gaming.

The channel would be exclusive to subscribers of Microsoft’s Xbox Live video-game network, said the people, who sought anonymity because the talks are private. At an April 12 meeting in Redmond, Washington, Chernin suggested raising Xbox Live’s monthly fee by $1 or $2 to add programming aimed at the online service’s young, male target audience, one person said.

So it’s only for Live Gold subscribers and it will add $2/month to your subscription. This brings a year of Live up from $50 to $74 a year. It’s just not worth it. And why only target young males? I’m in that demographic but I don’t need another station that thinks that if they just show tits and explosions I’ll watch their programs. When I want tits, the internet is a much better resource. And Netflix gives me all the explosions I need in their action film section.

And targeting female gamers doesn’t mean you have to have “Barbie’s Fun Time Hour”, or shows about fashion and “Petz”. The most common complaint I hear from my female friends (and in the forums) is that they like the same games as the guys but just hate the over-sexualization of the female characters, and the expectation that they only play the “Imagine” series of games.

And would it be to hard to realize the average gamer is 30yrs old and would like a little more maturity in their programs. That doesn’t mean sex and violence. How about a Discovery Channel style show about how a game is made? Look at what goes on with the programmers, artists, writers, voice actors, etc.. Or how about how life influences art, which influences life?

I don’t want anymore shows that look like they were produced by Micheal Bay.
