Gamasutra reports that Wal-Mart is installing kiosks in some stores that will accept used game trades. The Kiosks, which look very similar to the Red Box kiosks in McDonalds, are technically the property of e-Play and they are simply renting space. So while it’s technically not Wal-Mart most people will not no the difference.
So essentially how the system works is you have to bring in the game disc (PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Wii games only) and the original box. Scan the UPC code of the original box. The machine gives you a price. Accept the price, read an agreement to sell, accept sell agreement. Insert Disc in one slot, box in another. Swipe your Drivers License, Smile for the Camera (yes it takes your picture), and Swipe a Debit or Credit card to receive payment. Payment takes up to 3 days as they have to come to the kiosk and verify that you inserted the game you said you did.
Essentially, the only people who will use this either do not live near a Gamestop (or other Used Game Store), or its 1 in the morning and you really need to get rid of some games. In other words I expect it to be a complete flop. It does allow $1 a day rentals of games and movies, which may not do so bad, I actually wouldn’t mind a $1 rental of the latest games as a way to preview before spending $60 dollars on a piece of crap. I might actually consider walking into a Wal-Mart for that, and I really hate Wal-Mart.
So far only 77 stores have the kiosks. None in Gainesville, FL. Search for one here.
