The BBC is reporting that a new category has been added to the Ivor Novello Awards for Video Game Music. The new award will be one of just six categories at the Ivor Novellos, which take place on 20 May, 2010. To qualify for the award the composition team must consist of at least 1/3rd British Nationals (This includes Scotland and N. Ireland)
This is a great achievement for the gaming community. For years the industry has tried to break free from the stigma of games being simply hobbies, or child’s play. This is great recognition of Video games as an Art form that is just as worthy of praise as any symphony or movie.
And it’s really about time. Some games, such as HALO and Final Fantasy, had their soundtracks performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And the London Symphony Orchestra has played for Tomb Raider games. So it’s not as if the idea of high quality soundtracks for games is new.
Now if we could only get the Art community to stop recognizing Andy Warhol.
