Good news, Valkyria fans! According to a post on the Playstation Blog, Sega will be releasing a demo for Valkyria Chronicles 2 with today’s PSN update. The PSP demo will be downloadable from the PlayStation Network sometime today, and I will have my thoughts of the demo up sometime soon as well. I chose the title as my most wanted game of the month; so, you know that I’m plenty excited for it.
Along with some class restructuring, Sega has also added the ability to decorate your tank in this game, with some of the decals being exclusive to the western release of the title. There are also some unlockable characters in the game, including some familiar faces from the first title. According to some of the conversations in the comments, there may be some bonuses for those who complete the demo before starting up the full version of the game, as well.
The PSP-exclusive game is set for a simultaneous retail and PSN downloadable release in North America on the 31st of August.
Update: The demo offers one “tutorial” map where you have three units to face off against a set of scouts on open terrain. It teaches the basics such as running, aiming, and using sandbags for cover. It should only take a couple turns to beat. Then there is also an additional mission where you face off against a full cadre of enemies of all types, both foot soldiers and tanks. This one takes a few more turns and feels more like a real battle from the original game.
The game plays very much like the original. Sega has done a great job of bringing both the gameplay feel as well as the aesthetic to the PSP. I had my doubts that the art style would translate to the smaller screen, but it looks really nice and the music is good too. If you’ve played the original Valkyria Chronicles and wanted more, you’ll love this one, too. For those who haven’t played the first one, this demo will give you a good idea of what the game is like without being too hard on newcomers.
