So we mentioned the other day how UBIsoft is going to require you to have a constant internet connection for single player games. See here. Well PC Gamer magazine has gotten a preview copy of Assassin’s Creed 2 which has the new DRM built in. What did they find?
The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you’re not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft’s ‘Master servers’. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen – all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.
That’s right. It doesn’t just pause like they said it would. It dumps you out of the game and loses your progress. Ubi wouldn’t even let them show a screen capture of the action so they had to make an “Artistic” rendition in MS Paint.
I can’t believe that anyone at UBIsoft thought this would be a good Idea. Internet connections get lost all the time. I would never buy a game that had such crappy systems embedded in it. I don’t want to encourage piracy but when the pirates give you a better product then something has gone terribly wrong. When you are trying to compete with free you have to have added value that the free product does not. Adding this does not add value to your product. It does not make me want to purchase your product. And honestly, if this is how you plan on conducting business from now on you can count on me never buying one of your products.
