AnimeNewsNetwork is reporting that the city of Tokyo is working on a new animation project to draw in visitors for the city. The anime will be approximately 10 minutes long and will stream from the city’s tourism website in eight languages. The major highlights of the video will be places of interest to young people who enjoy Japanese animation. The project is being paid for by a government subsidy of about 50 million yen (approximately $550,000).
According to the Tokyo Shimbun article (in Japanese), the city’s tourism site has been featuring animated shorts since 2001, but the current project will bring these up to date. According to a recent survey, 48% of visitors to Tokyo used the Internet to help plan their travel while 47% used travel guides. As younger travelers turn more towards the Internet than travel guides for planning their trips, the proportions of those two results should grow further apart, increasing the importance of updating the Tokyo tourism website.
