At IFA, Sony debuted a new technology that would allow for an all new PlayStation 3 experience. Nate Lanxon of CNET UK was able to get his hands on a demo of the 3-D Playstation experience. The setup available at IFA used a Bravia TV that is able to manipulate computer-generated images, combined with a pair of 3-D glasses, into a 3-D display, but Sony staff at the show indicated that they are working on putting that technology directly into the PS3, making any HDTV capable of 3-D display. The new Bravia is expected to debut in 2010 while the PS3 enhancement is scheduled for 2011 or 2012.There were also indications that future incarnations of Sony’s Blu-Ray players and Vaio laptops could include this technology.
Without getting my own hands on the hardware, it’s hard for me to have a full appreciation for its abilities. However, I can see great applicability for sports and racing games. As someone who prefers RPGs, though, I don’t really see this as a big selling point for me. Sure it might be neat to play FFXIII in 3-D, but I don’t really see it actually adding anything to the gameplay.
