Sony has finally ended the speculation about the name of their upcoming motion controller. The “Move” made its official debut at GDC yesterday. Names like Arc and Gem were tossed around for months leading up to the event, but they were all a ruse. While I can’t say I’m moved by the name, I certainly like it better than Microsoft’s Natal. Sony intends to offer bundles of the Move with PS3 systems and Playstation Eye as well smaller bundles for those who already own the PS3. The Eye/Move pack will come with a motion-enhanced game and sell for around $100.
There are two parts to the Move control system, similar to the Wiimote and Nunchuk but still quite different. Their detection systems work on different parts of EM spectrum, and the Move controllers connect to the PS3 via bluetooth. Sony expects 20 Move-supported games to be released this fiscal year with plenty more to come considering the list of publishers who are working to support the Playstation Move already.
Looking at the list, I expect to see at least one Cooking Mama port from Majesco, a Harvest Moon title from Marvelous, and plenty of sports games from Electronic Arts. What really intrigues me are names like Atlus and Gust; I can’t imagine what kind of trouble Gust will get into with motion controllers and an Ar Tonelico title.
