Dan got me thinking about how the potential for USB mass storage on the Xbox 360 fits in to the Datel fiasco. To sum it up quickly, Microsoft disabled 3rd party memory units. Datel, a third party memory maker, sued Microsoft over the update. From the court filings we found out Datel was the ONLY third party Memory Unit maker. And MS’s response to everything has been “Apple does it why can’t we?”
So with an update coming that would allow you to use any thumb drive or USB HD as you would a Microsoft MU, has Microsoft changed its mind about third party MU’s?. Not a fucking chance!
Technically the memo only talks about the size requirements of the memory unit. The unit has to be at least 1 GB and no more than 16GB in size (any extra memory is simply ignored). I’m predicting that the drives in question will have to have the “Official XBOX Seal of Approval” to work, meaning third party makers like Datel will still not be able to sell memory units. One of MS’s arguments against Datel’s units was that they allowed cheating to occur. Their case with Datel would quickly fall apart if they were to allow any USB device to connect. What would stop anyone else from enabling cheats on their USB drive? Nothing. The only way MS can stop the same issues they had with Datel is if only MS brand devices are used.
If I’m right this would explain the storage limit on the usb devices. Microsoft will be making a new type of memory card that coincidentally (::rolls eyes:::) has the same file size of the expelled Datel units but is still not the same size as the HD units that MS already sells for the 360. Thats all this will be. The new MU will be more expensive than the previous memory unit (512KB for $40), but not quite the same price of the 60GB drive (currently the smallest HD they sell. $100). I wouldn’t be surprised if they discontinue the 60GB drive before unveiling this. They’ve been price gouging their customers with expensive drives for years why expect them to change now.
SO essentially don’t get your hopes up. Nothing to see here. Ignore the man behind the curtain.
