Nintendo released a new firmware update for its DSi and Wii consoles. Nintendo’s official release notes for the DSi merely say, “Nintendo DSi Menu Ver 1.4.1U * This update provides behind-the-scenes improvements to system performance.” However the Wii notes let the cat out of the bag.
Wii Menu 4.3
Unauthorized Modifications
Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files. In addition, there are some behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.
gbatemp.net has been testing various flashcarts for the DSi and have a running list of carts that are blocked and some that are not.
Blocked (as of the writing of this story)
- Acekard 2i
- Supercard DSTwo
- M3i Zero
- iPlayer
- DSTTi
Not Blocked
- EZ-Flash Vi
- iSmart DS
- Hyper R4i
That’s right….the infamous R4 cart, the most popular flashcart has been unaffected by the upgrade. (I have been corrected. The R4 Cart was never updated for the DSi. The Hyper R4i is a clone that was. So fail on me
) So fail there. On the Wii side of things, WiiBrew already has a workaround.
I wish these companies would realize that if they give their customers a way to run their own code on the system then they will have less issues with piracy. Look at the PS3. It was piracy free for 4 years thanks to the Other OS option which let you run your own code on the system. That option was taken away in April this year. Now about 4 months later we have the PSJailbreak which not only lets you run homebrew but also pirated games. The people that hack for homebrew are mainly White Hats, but once you force them to hack the system to run their software it opens up an attack vector for the Black Hats to get in too.
Will this lesson be learned? Not a chance, but one can still dream.

Minor point, the Hyper R4i isn’t “the infamous R4 cart” it’s just one of the many clones that use R4 in the name to associate themselves with the best selling DS flash card. The original R4 was never updated for DSi.
The Unauthorized Modifications note has been there since System Menu 3.3 when they first attempted to block the Twilight Hack, it’s not new. See the June 17, 2008 update at http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/systemMenuFeatures.jsp

Good catch on the R4. If the clones work though the originals probably will too.
System Menu 3.4 and 4.0 don’t include the Unauthorized Modifications note but there definitely has been a trend for most of the System menu updates to be used for the blocking of homebrew.

Sorry, my mistake. Looks like 4.2 was the first one with that specific note
