Sony has announced that firmware update 3.21 will be released this Thursday, April 1st, for all PS3 owners, and in it they continue with the grand Sony tradition of taking away capabilities from the PlayStation 3, this time by removing the option of installing an operating system. The PS3 slims already lost this functionality, but the next firmware update will remove it from fat PS3s, too. Sony originally said that they would be sure to keep the feature in older PS3s when the slim line came out, but Patrick Seybold from SCEA cites “security concerns” as the reasoning behind the removal of the OS installation option. Recent reports of the PS3 being hacked, along with piracy concerns seem to be at the root of this decision, but Sony did not make any mention of specifics during their announcement.
While the installation of this firmware is “optional,” if you choose not to update, you lose access to the PlayStation Network, and eventually some titles will require updated firmware, meaning your game selection will be limited as well. For Linux users, the update will disable access to the portion of the hard drive with your files on it; so, you will have to back everything up elsewhere before installing the update.
I personally was going to try installing Linux on mine next weekend, but apparently that is a moot point now. Thanks for making that decision for me, Sony.

The reason for this is not just the trend Sony has of Removing features from their products with each revision (where all other companies ADD functionality). It’s because 20-year-old George Hotz, aka geohot, (the first person to crack the iPhone) was also the first to hack the PS3 to gain access to the entire system. Currently the “other OS option” did not give you full access to prevent piracy. Guess where he managed to find the security hole……..If you guessed through the other OS option you win 10 internets.
Now that the secret is out they’re afraid of rampant piracy. I wouldn’t worry about piracy when your in third place. But then Sony has a history of making dumb decisions.
