logo 300x205 No Surprises: Final Fantasy XIII Sets Japanese PS3 Sales RecordWithin its first week on the market, Square Enix’s latest Final Fantasy title has already crushed the record for PS3 game sales in Japan. It sold over 1 million copies in four days and over 1.5 million in the first week. While these numbers still pale in comparison to the gaudy 5 million+ that Modern Warfare 2 sold here in the United States, when compared to the old record holder in Japan, it’s pretty impressive. According to Media Create, the previous record holder was Metal Gear Solid 4, which moved less than 750,000 copies.

While the Final Fantasy series isn’t as popular in North America as first person shooter titles like Halo or Modern Warfare, it’s still going to do yeoman’s work when it crosses the Pacific. The series usually sells about as well as it does in Japan, but that means a far smaller percentage of the install base is purchasing the game. Still, I expect to see at least 1.5 or 2 million copies come off the shelves once the game is released for PS3 and XBox 360 on March 9, 2010.
