ICv2 is reporting that Christopher Handley has been given a sentencing date of January 25th. Federal Judge James E. Gritzner will be handling the sentencing for the man from Iowa. In May, Handley plead guilty to two counts of obscenity stemming from possession of manga that graphically depict sexual situations involving minors. As part of his plea agreement, three other counts were dropped. He faces up to 15 years in prison for his crimes and half a million dollars in fines as punishment.

    I still can’t believe this shit. I wouldn’t have taken a plea deal. At least go for an appeal.

    Just to put this in perspective for people this is what Niel Gaiman said about the case.

    “I wrote a story about a serial killer who kidnaps and rapes children, and then murders them,” Gaiman said, referring to a storyline in “The Doll’s House.” “We did that as a comic, not for the purposes of titillation or anything like that, but if you bought that comic, you could be arrested for it? That’s just deeply wrong. Nobody was hurt. The only thing that was hurt were ideas.”

    [...] Christopher Handley, the Iowa man who plead guilty to obscenity charges stemming from importation and possession of manga containing sexual depictions of children, has been sentenced to six months in prison plus three years supervised release and five years probation. Handley faced up to fifteen years for possession of the manga which were determined to be without “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.” Handley did not possess any other forms of erotica that depicted children, making him the first person in the United States charged under the PROTECT act without possession of actual child pornography.
