FUNimation has recently announced an initiative to expand their reach into co-production. To that end, effective immediately, they have hired Chris Moujaes as Director of Original Entertainment. Moujaes will be in charge of “acquisition and development of a slate of original anime titles based on major intellectual properties.” Previous positions for Moujaes include development for AOL Kids and co-founder of Boomstar, Inc., a company devoted to international television co-production and, through their studio facilities, animation services. His prior experience with these companies should greatly help FUNimation get their Original Entertainment division off the ground quickly. With their move towards co-production, FUNimation hopes to be more active in the development of original anime series rather than just the licensing and importing of series. They are not the first American company to venture into this arena, as Manga Entertainment and Bandai Entertainment have been involved in co-production before.
