geocities logo End of an Era: Geocities Goes Under DestructionGeocities was a haven for anyone wanting to build their own website in the 1990′s and early 2000′s; it offered anyone with a computer the chance to code some html and make a site about whatever they want. It’s a sad day in internet history: No more retina-crippling Star Trek fansites or family picture sites that spammed marquee and blink tags. As of today, Yahoo will be pulling all those “Under Construction” signs.

Geocities was one of the big players in the free internet hosting scene in the late 90′s along with fellow titan Angelfire. The company went public in 1998 and was bought by Yahoo in 1999 for $3 billion, one of the bigger purchases before the internet bubble really burst. However, one it was in Yahoo’s hands, they had a very hard time trying to make it profitable. After a decade of ownership, Yahoo stopped taking registrations earlier this year, and will be shutting down the servers today. Yahoo has offered to save your pages for $5/month with their new service. If you’re not paying though, to my knowledge, they have no intentions of keeping the pages archived, but that’s what the Wayback Machine is for, if you’re really desperate.

The LA Times put together a pretty good article on the subject, and xkcd has done a very fitting site design tribute if you miss the old days.
