Sheldon Dorf, the founder of San Diego Comic-Con has passed away at the age fo 76 due to complications from diabetes. Dorf started Comic-Con in San Diego in 1970 as a gathering place for a small group of comic book fans. Over the years, San Diego Comic-Con has grown to be one of the largest comic conventions in the nation, becoming a site for many licensing announcements and press conferences regarding television, movies, and other media intermixed with the original comic book hobbyists. Attendance estimates for this year’s event reached as high as 140,000 people. While I never had to opportunity to meet Mr. Dorf personally, nor have I had the chance to attend San Diego Comic-Con, his convention has been an inspiration for many other conventions around the country.
Rest in Peace, Sheldon Dorf. You will be missed.
