The Delimiter is reporting that Michael Atkinson is stepping down from his role as Attorney-General of South Australia. He will retain his seat in Parliament until 2014, but will vacate his other roles. Atkinson is up for re-election this year, and easily won his seat; the Gamers 4 Croyton party ran on the platform of adding R18+ classification, but candidate Kat Nicholson only received about 3.7% of the vote.
Atkinson has been under heavy criticism due to his anti-gaming stance and commitment to blocking the addition of R18+ rating to the Australian classification system, essentially blocking any video game title that is considered too mature for exposure to teenagers. Earlier this month, Atkinson also reportedly sued a man for calling him a a “crook” and was found to be allotting government funds for a study linking video games and violence. Once a new Attorney-General is put in position, there is a very good possibility of Australia passing the R18+ classification, keeping games such as Left 4 Dead 2 from being banned unless they retool their game to decrease mature content.
