If we have learned anything from movies like Freddie vs. Jason or The Avengers, it’s that if you throw the right characters into the right scenario, you can have a successful crossover that gives a new dimension to already awesome franchises. Crossovers are often used to try and breathe new life into aging franchises in the hopes that fans will pick it up and enjoy it. A lot of work goes into making a good Hollywood crossover because the creative teams don’t want to disappoint fans, but sometimes we get huge disasters like That So Suite Life of Hannah Montana, a Disney creation scarier than Frankenstein.
Anime is another medium that has tried to put a spin on crossovers, the biggest example being Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles. Created by the ladies of Clamp, Tsubasa was a mash-up of different Clamp anime such as Angelic Layer, XXXHolic, Chobits, Cardcaptor Sakura and many others. It was like Kingdom Hearts where they took new and existing characters from different Square Enix games and Disney cartoons and had them traverse the expansive Disney universe.Another successful anime crossover were the Lupin the Third vs. Detective Conan specials. In their anime they were thrown together by circumstance, Conan was solving the mystery of a murder and Lupin wanted to steal a princess’s crown, but they inevitably team up to reveal a conspiracy and out the bad guys. These crossovers are what inspired us to think about what crossovers we personally would want to see and enjoy. It took a fair bit of time to think about what anime could fit together, but a few of us put our heads together and created a little list of our dream crossovers.

Naruto and Attack on Titan
My inspiration for this one came from a dream, I don’t remember what the dream was about, except that Eren and Naruto were both in it. In trying to analyze the dream, I actually came up with a plot idea instead. So in Naruto, we know that there are the five great ninja lands, but even combined they only take up one small portion of all the land, and we don’t know much about the lands surrounding it. So, what if the reason they don’t know about the outside lands is because they themselves are surrounded by a gigantic wall that is meant to keep the Titans out? The Kages would be the only ones who know, but for the sake of keeping relative order to things, they must keep it a secret. In this crossover idea, there is another evil ninja organization that discovers this secret and wants to find a way to use the Titans to overtake the ninja lands. It would present a new challenge because the only way to assuredly kill the Titans is to sever the nape of their neck, but the Naruto gang doesn’t know this, so it would be an interesting to see how they would try to overcome the Titans. In the end we would want to see the characters of Attack on Titan like Eren, Mikasa, Armin and most assuredly Levi, so as the ninjas are getting overwhelmed they swoop in and tell the ninjas about the Titans only weakness and then Eren turns into his Titan form while Naruto goes Demon Fox and they combined with the others take on the ninja organization and the Titans in a battle that would probably blow the minds of every anime fan out there.
Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro and Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok
Here is one that would be an interesting mash up of two super sleuths from heaven and hell, or more specifically the demon world and realm of the gods. Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro is about a demon named Neuro who has an insatiable appetite for mysteries–in the literal sense. After solving every mystery in the demon world, he teams up with a high school girl and makes her a detective so he can find and solve the ultimate mystery and eat it. Loki (Norse god of mischief) of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, was dispelled from the realm of the gods and was imprisoned in the body of a little boy. The only way for him to return to his realm is to collect evil auras that surround peoples hearts, and to do this, he opens up a detective agency that specializes in paranormal happenings. So we have two supernatural beings who are detectives and wish to solve mysteries both with their very own agendas, both are partnered with humans and other supernatural beings, and the mysteries they solves are anything but normal. This is especially true in Neuro’s case, where the culprit always loses their humanity and turns into some sort of monster. Throw these two together to solve a case of monumental proportions, have them race to see who solves it first, but in the end have them team up and solve it so Neuro can be one step closer to being satiated and Loki can be closer to home.

Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica
When I first heard about this topic, I had a hard time coming up with ideas outside of the realm of potential “X vs Y” shounen matchups, but I managed to find inspiration from Michael’s article on magical girl shows. Growing up in the 90’s and being a fan of anime meant that I watched my fair share of Sailor Moon. I enjoyed the show fine, but at times it came off almost sickeningly sweet, especially with the G.I. Joe “Knowing is half the battle” moral lesson at the end. We already know that a reboot of the series is on the horizon, but whether or not it will share the original’s tone is still unknown. However, what I would like to see is a crossover with a more recent magical girl team: Puella Magi Madoka Magica. While fighting against the forces of the Nega-verse (or whatever it is they’re fighting) the Sailor Scouts are trapped in a bizarre, awkwardly animated dimension. Confused by the sudden appearance of the witch space, they are greeted by a strange-looking cat creature, who asks them to join forces with an even younger team of magical girls, in exchange for a single wish. I really think that the two groups would mesh very well, with Kyubey taking over duties as the cute and cuddley mascot character for the team (possibly by force). The dangling temptation of the wish would also give a new dynamic for characters who we’re already familiar with. As anyone who had seen Madoka can attest, the team up would only serve to strengthen Sailor Moon‘s themes of love and friendship, and definitely wouldn’t result in anything terrifying and emotionally scarring.

Chunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai and Ao No Exorcist
So, my crossover is a bit on the more obscure side. You see, there’s an anime, called Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai! and it feels like nobody watches it. It makes me really sad because the anime is incredibly interesting, especially the element of it where they go into this strange, imaginary world where they wage these epic, almost LARP-esque battles. Now, take that, and ram it inside the world of Ao No Exorcist, where only certain people can see the demons and evil around them, and those that can, generally become exorcists to fight them. Now, those demon-speaking, adventure-lusting teenagers need to face the realities of the evil they wish to fight, and can possibly unleash the amazing power they fantasize about. All in all, it’d be a darker turn on one of my favorite anime, as well as a way to help diversify the characters of a relatively good shounen series.
From the popular to the obscure, it seems, if done right, almost any anime could be given a crossover partner. With so many anime being produced and ever more classics to go back and rewatch, there is always the possibility that a studio could see one of these old creations and think of the possibilities. What anime you would want to see turned into a crossover? Do you think our crossovers would work or should they be combined with something else? Let us know what you think down below.
